Kingfisher WIN.
We’ve sifted back through all the old patrol records in the patrol boxes. We’ve talked to all the old patrol librarians. We’ve looked for remains under the hut. Apparently no Patrol Leader has ever organized an over-nighter. Evar. Until now. On 21st December 2008, Cameron Dalziel, Stempy & Alistair started in WIllingham and spent the day in icy 12˚C conditions, as they hiked through the treacherous fenland tracks to Rampton.
They sat down to a lunch of lukewarm baked beans— spaghetti in Stempy's case—purchased fresh that morning on the first ever Kingfisher Tesco Expedition, then forged on along a track beside a stream where “Alistair sung all the songs he knew”. They took Gun's lane back to Histon, where “we trudged through mud and cow poo, Alistair got stuck three times in the mud and the conditions also filled our shoes with iced water with every step”. They celebrated the successful conclusion of their mission by feasting on sausage rolls and (dry) Bread and singing tales of Scouts of long ago around the radiator. The stars of the night sky were bright, just a week after the brightest full moon this decade, but the cold night was tempered by the modern sleeping bags, and the fact that they were only looking at them through Cameron’s skylight.
