What is SWAN?
The Objective of the SWAN Sailing Expedition is to help prepare young people for life by developing their understanding of the Scout Promise and Law.
The Scout Promise:
On my honour, I promise that I will do my best
to do my duty to God and to The Queen,
to help other people and to keep the Scout Law.
The Scout Law:
- A Scout is to be trusted.
- A Scout is loyal.
- A Scout is friendly and considerate.
- A Scout belongs to the worldwide family of Scouts.
- A Scout has courage in all difficulties.
- A Scout makes good use of time and is careful of possessions and property.
- A Scout has self-respect and respect for others.
The Method is:
· To offer a challenging adventure, planned and controlled by people with appropriate ideals, skills and qualifications.
· To provide a framework for young people to gain Royal Yachting Association (R.Y.A) qualifications and ultimately skipper an eight metre yacht on inland waters.
· To give opportunities for FUN, friendship, fellowship, team membership, leadership, service to others and learning by doing.
Health and Safety is always the top priority.
Leaders and instructors: hold Scout Association Adventurous Activity Permits and a current first aid certificate as required by the Scout Association. Appropriate checks with regard to child protection are made.
The Expedition Staff consists of Scouting Leaders and , R.Y.A. Qualified Instructors with many years of Scouting and Broads Sailing experience, who are drawn from all walks of life.

The SWAN Norfolk Broads Sailing Expedition was founded in 1950 by ‘The Admiral’ Geoff Keighley (1924 – 2008) see www.facebook.com/groups Geoff is a Legend. It now includes members from Shropshire, Hampshire, Devon, Mid-Wales, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Sussex, Kent, Derbyshire, Surrey, Wiltshire, Norfolk, Cumbria and Nottinghamshire.
The expedition has always had a high standard of training, enabling people as young as 17 to become competent skippers of inland yachts on tidal waters.
The training scheme became more formalised in 1981 covering more than the requirements for the Royal Yachting Association (R.Y.A.) National Keelboat Certificate.
In 2002 the expedition came under the administration of the Nene Scout District (Peterborough).
