New Explorer Scout Unit for Histon!
In 2001, The Scout Association was losing members. And the biggest problem was Venture Scouting; something was going wrong with Scouting above the age of about fourteen. With small groups, increasing exam pressure and a disconnect when students left for University, the old formula wasn't working.
Venture Scouting was replaced with the Explorer Scout section. We've been building back up nationally since then, with a great new formula. And Explorer Scouting has now come to Histon. The new "Panther" Explorer Scout Unit, operating in conjunction with 2nd Cottenham Scouts, started on Friday, with a stunning turnout, of ex-Scouts, Guides and their mates. It was so good, there's even hope of running in exam term!
Explorer Scouts follow six programme zones - outdoor, skills, physical, community, global, and values and relationships. Another Cambridge Explorer Unit have been in the Gambia already this year. Two years ago, they built a Scout hut in Ghana, brick by brick. The Queen's Scout award includes Gold DofE. Most kids keep coming back for the social and adrenaline parts though - and an environment that trusts them to get out on their own, and learn through doing.
Panther Explorers need members and they need volunteer leaders. Turnout was good with word of mouth, but there's no limit, and the Scouts are ready to compete for the Friday night. (If you can't choose, Over and Hardwick Explorers meet on different days!) As a volunteer leader, you'll be physically and mentally stretched just like the Scouts. Scouting is not just the UK's largest mixed youth movement, it's a family. Now's a great time to join.
For the first few weeks, Explorers regular meetings are in Cottenham on Margett Street at 19:30 on Fridays, or you can call Greg Harewood on (07973) 795871.
