Beaver Info Pack

Welcome to 1st Histon Beavers!
We look forward to meeting you on Thursday 21st January. We meet on Thursdays from 6-7 pm at the Scout and Guide Hut (at the entrance to the Sports Centre car park at Impington Village College.)
Please could you fill in the forms and bring them to the first meeting. We don’t ask you to pay the subscription until your son has attended for three or four weeks and is sure he wants to join.
Similarly, you do not need to buy the uniform straight away. He does not need this until he is invested (which is when he makes the Beaver Scout Promise). We shall be holding the Investiture later in the term (date to be confirmed). All family and friends are welcome to attend this ceremony which will take place at 6.45 p.m.
Beavers wear a uniform of turquoise sweatshirt and optional navy blue activity trousers, with a 1st Histon neckerchief and Beaver woggle. These can be purchased from the Cambridge Scout Shop (address and opening times on the attached sheet). In the summer they may wear either a turquoise Beaver polo shirt or T-shirt (available from the Scout Shop) or a black 1st Histon T-shirt (available through the Leaders, not the shop). The 1st Histon T-shirts have the advantage that they are also worn in Cubs
We have a rota for parents to help at the meetings. We cannot run the meetings without this help especially during the summer term when we have more outdoor activities, so please sign up to take a turn if you can. Brothers and sisters of Beavers are welcome to come along when you are helping at a meeting.
As there is a considerable waiting list for Beavers, we do expect the boys to attend all meetings, unless they are ill or there is some other very good reason. Please let us know if he will be absent for more than one meeting. If a boy misses three meetings without good reason, his place will be offered to another on the waiting list.
We operate a Yellow/ Red Card system to encourage good behaviour at our meetings. A Yellow card will be given if a child misbehaves, does not listen to Leaders etc. If a child achieves 3 Yellow cards in a single evening, this equates to a Red Card. If a Red Card is attained the parent will be phoned immediately and asked to come and pick their child up before the end of the meeting and the child will be suspended from the following meeting. If the child persists in their bad behaviour and achieves 3 Red Cards within a term, the parents will be contacted to discuss whether their child should remain in Beavers
The 1st Histon Scout Group has an Executive Committee which is essential to the smooth running and administration of the Group. If you could spare some time to help (meetings are only every couple of months), I will put you in touch with the Secretary.

Dear Parents/Carers,
Membership Records
The Scout Movement in the United Kingdom is a membership organisation. To enable it to operate - and to communicate with its members - it is necessary to maintain records about them. This will include keeping details of name, address, date of birth and contact telephone numbers. We will also be keeping details of your child's progress through Scouting (badges gained etc.). Information held in our Scout Group may be shared from time to time within Scouting including the Headquarters of the Association.
New legislation came into force in March 2000 which covers the protection and processing of personal data. Adults and young people have the same rights under the Data Protection Act 1998. The Act covers paper based (as well as computer based) information.
Certain information is classed by the law as 'Sensitive Personal Data'. In a Scouting context this may include information about your child’s
- health (to ensure that we are prepared for medical emergencies it is important that we hold relevant information).
- disabilities (to ensure a safe
integration of your child’s participation in activities, details of any
disability need to be known).
- religious or similar beliefs (this will help us ensure that we make appropriate arrangements when necessary).
- racial or ethnic origin (again this will help us ensure that we are sensitive to cultural needs of our members).
To hold this 'Sensitive Personal Data' we will need your explicit consent. This can be given by completing the enclosed form. The information will only be used in connection with your child’s membership of the Scout Movement in the United Kingdom: this will include membership management and communications.
None of the information provided will be passed to any third party outside the Scout Movement without your consent. You can give your consent by completing the question on the form.

Subscriptions
You may either pay at the beginning of each term, or for the whole academic year (with a small discount) if you pay in September.
First child £25 per term
(or £70 per annum if paid before the end of the first week of October)
Second/Subsequent child £20 per term
(or £56 per annum if paid before the end of the first week of October)
The Committee hopes you will feel that this still represents very good value for your money.
Subscriptions are paid to be a member of the 1st Histon Scout Group and not just to be a member of Beavers or Cubs etc. So this means that if your child is expected to move from Beavers to Cubs or from Cubs to Scouts during this academic year then you are still able to pay the yearly amount.
Subs have been held at the same amount as the last few years.
GIFT AID - how to give the Scouts 25% extra money at no cost to yourself…
Please make sure you complete the ‘Gift Aid declaration’ overleaf. If you have done one already it is not necessary to do so again (even if for a different child). But, if not sure – it does no harm to do so again. This makes a significant addition to our funds.
