FAQ

  • Q: I quit Scouts
  • A:Maybe you just needed the freedom of Explorers already. Maybe you got bored of the 10-year olds. Whatever. Scouts is the section most kids leave. And Explorers is the section most people join of their choice. Because its yours. Mates. Adventure. Choice. People like you. Not Boring.
  • Q: Friday's bad for me, and Cottenham is miles away!
  • A: Flexibility. It's all about flexibility. You have exams, and a social life. It's okay to pick and choose. Just let us know if you have to cancel. Oh, and we know half of you will come from Histon; we'll just pick the best hut for what we're doing that night..
  • Q: More info?
  • A: Official Explorer-Central

It's happened! Join our brand new Explorer Scout Unit for Histon, Impington and Cottenham while it's still fresh!

Depending on what we're doing, we might meet at the Cottenham or Histon (IVC) Scout huts or somewhere else entirely. Assume Cottenham if you're not sure. The critical part is the people. If you want to join - mail us. This will be your Explorers. If you want to cave, we cave. Climb - we climb. Kayak. Mountaineer. Camp. Relax. Party. All up to you. Own It.

Step 1: Are you in the right place?

Explorers is for young people aged 13½-18. If you're younger, you want Scouts. If you're 18-25, your first choice is Scout Network. Or you can help us run this.

Will you enjoy it? Probably. Try it and find out. If you want some of your social time to be in the great outdoors, to be a bit more structured than trying to blag your way into the pub, maybe get the adrenaline pumping from time to time - but basically be with like-minded people.... then come and talk to us.

Don't worry if you weren't a Scout (or a Guide or a Cub or a Brownie or a Pixie or whatever else). It's handy that about half Explorer Scouts were recently Scouts, because they tend to put tents up blindfolded. For the rest of us, it's a chance to escape from the daily treadmill of school or work and do something completely different, and you can learn everything as you go along.

Scouting, of course, does have a long and proud tradition. And if you have a little drive, it's the fastest and best way to get your D of E, a multitude of qualifications for adventurous activities, and to get involved in community service. And to be part of a worldwide family of millions, and where many people make the friends that they keep for life.

Step 2: Join!

You can just come along... but check first if you want to be sure what we're doing. The facebook group is the best way to stay in touch for now, or you can mail or call. Sometime after Easter, or after you've been coming for a month, there'll be uniform and membership fees and all that malarkey, but they're giving is a good deal for everyone who joins at the start. You need to contact us - gregharewood@mac.com or call or text me on (07973) 795871. I'll try to get back to you in hours!

As soon as you can, please fill in the form a the back of the Welcome Pack and bring it in. Thanks!

Explorer Scouting north of the A14 here is run by Craftshill Explorers, and our unit will be their 3rd unit. You can read more about them on their site.
