sixer training day
I've been tasked with coming up with a session for trainee sixers for a District Sixer training day.
The idea is to have 4 or 5 bases. We make up the district trainee sixers into "sixes" and appoint a starter sixer and a starter second.
The "sixes" each go to a different one of the bases, where there are several things to be done. Adults watch them and make notes.
At the end of that base, a new sixer and second are appointed and everyone moves on to a new base, after a couple of minutes of feedback.
The bases will be only about 15 mins each, and simple tasks- the idea is to get each sixer/second to actually organise the six.
Has anyone done this before? Got any ideas of things that would combine for bases?
We're using a hall with a small field with fire slabs.
The idea is NOT to teach skills but to see how the sixers cope.
Thanks

Changes in district team
Well. Where would Wayne start. Why should he even. Maybe I am to old, tired, or whatever but Merryweather,s post just annoys me. I really find the tone (hard on the internet, I know) of this post quite sarcastic, patronising and juvenile. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion and as Scouts we should always respect the other persons views but this question to Wayne is just plain trouble making dressed up in fancy words. Wayne should not lower himself in getting involved in someone's petty little power trip.

[New] Awards Ceremony
Dear Wayne
I have been following the feedback on the awards process with interest, principally because i Have been frustrated with it in some ways myself, both where it is seen by some as almost a right after a number of years service and the problems of trying to get recognition for someone who has done fantastic work, but does not have many years service.
However no one yet seems to have suggested an awards ceremony. Maybe something that could be held yearly at a national level, and recognition at a high level. I know teacher of the year award gets great publicity, so why not leader of the year?

Help me buy a car, please!
Hi! Help!
- New (first) baby, with all associated rubbish to transport
- Mild off road ability would be nice
- Must have somewhere to pop a kayak... roof bars suitable
- Lots of seats nice, but not truly necessary
- Big would be quite nice actually, but not prepared to pay much extra for it
- Looking to spent about £10k for a used vehicle, but could be anything from 7-15.
I'm rather liking...
- Mondeo Titanium Estate
- Honda CR-V
Help!! Suggest! Explain! I need a Scout Leader Car... but it must also be wife and work compatible. I drive about 300 business miles a week.

The internet has coughed up a grater so far :( & I'm sick of looking at a McD's chip packet turned into a spider with french fry legs!!!!
TY,

Frost Mora knives
Hi
We're looking to buy a bunch of Frost Mora Companions (formerly Clipper) - preferably stainless steel and bright orange. Anyone know of any good deals out there?
The last time I bought some it was, I think, £40 for five, but the company I got them from then doesn't seem to stock them any more.
TIA

Snow Games, Please!!!
Hi! Quick, quick - meeting on Monday - help! I need SNOW GAMES :-)
So...
- traditional snow games
- variations on scouting games that work well in the snow
- pioneering projects for the snow
- sports that work well in the snow (without specialist kit)
(Not that I want to stifle the discussion for OTHER groups... but we have no knackered kayaks to waste, and no hills. It's Cambs. We DO have a large flat school field for running around and dragging things etc )

[New] Print Centre Sectional Items
Hi Wayne,
I use the Print Centre an awful lot for designing posters to advertise events within Group, County and District.
There has been for some time a section for Section Sprecific items that has been 'coming soon' for as long as I can remember.
When are these items likely to become live?
I also think that the SA should pay for a group licence for the official font and then allow leaders to request it from HQ. It could be easily monitored by askign for your membership number when requesting.

Cub programme that worked really well
Hi all, I'd just thought I'd share with you our programme from last night that worked really well We split the cubs up into 5 teams of three. (However, I would say that 3 is the maximum number yoou would want in a team, so you will need more than 5 bases if you have more than 15 cubs). The theme was linked to water shortages and access to clean water. Each team had a bucket, with some water in - the same amount in each bucket. They had to go around the 5 bases and try to 'win' as much water as they could. Of course, the bucket got heavier and heavier as the game progresses. Now, our bases weren't really linked to water shortages, but you could quite easily think of water related bases. our bases were: a general knowledge quiz, match the country names to their flags, match the map symbols to their names, build a tower out of jenga blocks and a sort of egg and spoon race (but with a small plastic ball - there was enough mess to clear up with spilled water!!!) Depending on how well they did, they could win up to 5 cups of water for each base. They then had the choice to 'gamble' with a chance card. These were more water shortage/access related, with things like: a charity installs a well - win 3 cups or severe drought - lose 4 cups. There was an equal chance of getting a lose or a win card The only problem was a few water spillages from when they were carrying their buckets and around the buckets where hey would collect or lose their water from, so we needed to keep mopping up spills so nobody slipped over

Updated template for Concrete5 Version 5.5
Concrete5 Website system now has a totally redesigned admin area, and an is, in my opinion one of the most suited to Scouting around, whats more its free.
Its straightforward to edit, but still very, very powerful.
Since I discovered Concrete5 and published a Scout friendly template here on Escouts, hundreds of sites have installed Concrete 5 and love it, even some people who wrote their own website system from scatch, have seen how powerful Concrete5 is and have made the switch.
Very recently, Concrete5 has made available version 5.5.1 which is a major change in the admin section and continued improvements in the front of the site. To get the benefit of this I have adapted the Scout template so that it can be used on version 5.5.1 and above.
If you have an existing site and want to upgrade, please backup and try it separately at another location, first. Read the guidance on the Concrete5 site.

Mammy mafia again
Anyone have advice on what to say to a parent (also a leader in the group) who wants to know why her child isn't being considered for PL or APL next year?
Now first off we are nowhere near thinking about next years PLs/APLs, secondly we look to the Patrol Leaders Council for their recommendations and thirdly right now the child isn't showing much aptitude for leadership (though of course that could change).
This came about because I suggested a couple of other scouts could be included in the upcoming PL/APL training being done at County (District) level, as we will have some spaces available. Two scouts were mentioned by other leaders and Mammy saw the email and so believes her precious is being left out.
I've deliberately not replied to the mail yet as it's just irritating me beyond belief and I'm pretty sure I'll say something very undiplomatic.
What do you think I should do?

What bags for a boil-in-the-bag breakfast?
My daughter is going on her ten tors training tommorrow and has to take a hot breakfast for Sunday. Her scout leader has suggested cooked sausages and baked beans that can be warmed through by boiling in the bag.
I'm not sure what type of bag would be OK to put in hot water without melting!
I have some Tesco food & freezer bags that have a zip seal - does anyone know if they would be suitable?
Your help would be greatly appreciated - Thanks

What's the name of the game where....?
All the scouts stand in a circle, and someone in the middle swings a thing on the end of a rope? Slowly getting faster until it catches the legs of someone, then they're out.
We call it jump the beaver, as it's a beaver soft toy on the end of the rope, and the explorers seem to like the name, but it must have a proper name.

Wodpress Plugin - Group Listings
looking for some advice with finding a Wordpress Plugin and wondered if any you have come across something similar.
On the County website we want to get a page listing Groups in each District, obviously it could be done as "content" but I'm looking for something that will allow us to manage the listing in the admin section and then display this on the frontend of the site. I can find a few people management plugins or link managements but I'd like one that would allow me to create custom lists with whatever we want as fields, eg name, location, contact, URL etc
ta very much

Staged Fundraising or Service Badge
There are occaisions in every Group where a YP deserves some recognition of their service, fundraising or other support for Scouting.
It might be the YP who always comes and helps at the working party, who is there early to help lay things out for the AGM, etc.
I don't find that the current challenges or badges are really the right reward since we expect all our YP to get all the core challenges to get their Chief Scouts Award.
It would need some careful wording of the requirements so that the YP demonstrate something over and above the norm, but flexible enough to allow reward to those situations we have not thought of.
I would suggest the badge is just the Scout symbol with a tick (the idea being the YP has been a better than good Scout) and a number (similar to nights away) starting from 5 (I think 1 would be given out too often and devalue the "exceptional" nature of the service to Scouting.
